The Hispanic Scholarship Fund
The Hispanic Scholarship Fund (HSF) is the nation’s premier Hispanic scholarship-granting organization. HSF supports outstanding Hispanic American students pursuing their college degrees. In its 25-year history, it has awarded more than 45,000 scholarships totaling $58 million to Latinos throughout the United States and Puerto Rico.
HSF was created for one simple reason: to strengthen America by advancing the college education of Hispanic Americans. Its goal is to double the rate of Hispanics earning a college degree to 18 percent by 2010.
During its first 25 years, HSF has accrued an impressive list of sponsors and supporters throughout the nation. In 1999, the organization received a historic grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., enabling it to expand significantly the number of programs and scholarships available to students. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has also demonstrated its support for HSF through a recent partnership that provided an additional $7.5 million to Hispanic American students. In addition to foundation partnerships, more than 100 of the nation’s Fortune 1000 companies have chosen to invest in HSF.
With the help of such generous support, HSF has been able to create several scholarship programs for students. The High School Scholarship Program assists Hispanics making the transition from high school to college. The College Scholarship Program is focused on college retention and encourages students to attain their college degrees. Currently, 20 metropolitan areas across the country participate in the Community College Transfer Scholarship Program, which assists students in making the transition from community college to four-year institutions. Lastly, the Gates Millennium Scholars Program has been created to provide awards to exceptional high school seniors for four years of study at the college of their choice.
HSF has managed contributors’ investments carefully, consistently receiving an ‘A’ rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy’s Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report, as well as the highest mark in the Better Business Bureau Wise Giving Guide.
Recognized as the nation’s largest and fastest-growing Hispanic Scholarship-granting organization, HSF was established in 1975 to provide scholarships based on need and merit to Hispanic students in the United States and Puerto Rico. In its first year, 115 students received scholarships that totaled $30,000. In its 25-year history, HSF has awarded more than 45,000 scholarships totaling $58 million. For the 2000-2001 academic year, HSF awarded more than $11.7 million in scholarships to nearly 5,000 deserving students.
